2.2.4 Certified TLE Associate

Description

An individual applying for the CertTLE Associate designation should be able to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the technology used in the theatre and live events industry. They should also demonstrate their fundamental understanding of safety issues related to this field, as well as the regulatory framework that applies to the theatre and live events industry.

Qualifying criteria

Applicants must have:

  • A relevant NQF-level 4 qualification in event technology or similar. An example of a relevant qualification might include the National Certificate: Live Event Technical Production (qualification 48669) or equivalent.
  • At least 1-year relevant experience working in the theatre or live events sector. Individuals working on a freelance basis should demonstrate that they have worked a minimum 105 days in each year.
  • Gained an endorsement from a person of good standing within the theatre and live-events industry

Designation competencies

A person applying for recognition as a Certified TLE Associate should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Fundamental knowledge of core technologies used in the technical production and live event industries, including audio, video, display (both projected imagery and flat panel display), event rigging, event power, event lighting, pyrotechnics, temporary structures, cabling and signal management (including the allocation of radio frequencies used in programme-making and special events). The candidate should also demonstrate a fundamental understanding of the key terms, rules, concepts, established principles and theories relating to stagecraft and event safety.
  • An understanding that knowledge in one field can be applied to related fields.
  • The ability to install and operate audio-visual and event technology in a familiar context and motivate a change using relevant evidence.
  • The ability to use knowledge to troubleshoot common problems within a familiar context, and the ability to apply a common solution within relevant parameters to meet the needs of small changes in the problem or operating context with an understanding of the consequences of related actions.
  • The ability to adhere to the SACIA code of conduct and understand societal values and ethics.
  • A fundamental ability to gather, analyse and evaluate information on event technology and carry out actions by interpreting information from text and operational symbols or representations.
  • The ability to communicate and present information reliably and accurately in written and oral form. This would include fundamental knowledge of software systems commonly used in the events industry.
  • Fundamental understanding of the event technical industry as a system within a broader context.
  • The capacity to take responsibility for own learning within a supervised environment and evaluate own performance against given criteria.
  • The capacity to take decisions about and responsibility for actions, and the capacity to take the initiative to address any shortcomings found.

Assessment

Applicants should complete an online examination (TLE001) that will test both the breadth and depth of their knowledge across a range of competencies specific to theatre and live events industry.

Recognition of Prior Learning

SACIA’s certification council recognize that many applicants for this designation will not hold a National Certificate: Live Event Technical Production (qualification 48669) or equivalent. The Council will encourage individual’s lacking such a qualification to apply for a professional designation if they can demonstrate a higher-level qualification, or additional work experience in the theatre and live events industry.
