Promoting professional standards and ethical business practice in the communications industry throughout Southern Africa.

SACIA is governed by a Board of Directors elected from amongst the membership, with an Executive Director appointed by the Board responsible for providing strategic leadership.
In addition, each of the SACIA Special Interest Groups is governed by a Council elected from amongst the members active in a particular discipline.
All in all, there are more than 40 members who contribute their time, energy and effort to leading the Association and our various Councils and Task groups.




Kevan Jones - Executive Director

Kevan Jones is the Executive Director of SACIA. He joined the Association in 2009 and has led the transformation of SACIA from a trade association to a SAQA-recognised professional body. He holds a MA degree from Regents University London school of Psychology & Psychotherapy. Kevan also holds the CAE designation for proven competence in Association Leadership from both the American and Canadian Societies of Association Executives.


Tinus Smit (chairman) - Cert BCT Professional

Tinus is an audio engineer and training service provider within the South African broadcast and media production communities. A sound-man at heart, he received his core training at the SABC while starting at the television division of the South African Air Force (SAATV). Here, he received a thorough grounding in technical directing and vision mixing for multi-cam events, linear editing (yes, on tape), VT operations, lighting, camera work, location sound, live audio and audio post, thus earning a reputation as a multi-skilled operator. He has been involved in training audio engineers and consulting to the industry since 1995, primarily due to his broad experience gained from touring SA with a concert group, as well as audio work ranging from ENG and location sound, boom operation, outside broadcast, live stage recording and mixing, to studio drama productions as well as television and film post-production projects. Hes worked on feature films, series, documentaries, corporates, live gala events, game shows, reality shows, and in short just about every stressful situation imaginable to a broadcast engineer or producer. 



Prof Janine Lewis (vice-chair)

Janine is involved in academia, where she is an associate professor in the Department of Performing Arts, Faculty of Arts & Design at Tshwane University of Technology. She has experience in curriculum transformation, programme design, and interdisciplinary andragogy learning-centred training. Her field of expertise includes Creative Industries, physical theatre, acting and theatre-making disciplines. She continues to use her knowledge in the art environment towards public performances, design and public productions. Janine was co-opted as a member of the SACIA Board in 2020.



Sharif Baker - Cert TLE Professional

Sharif has been involved in the entertainment industry for 30 years. He currently serves as chair of the Event Safety Council and vice-chair of the TPSA Council. He is the immediate pastchair of the SACIA Board. He is a robust Brand Ambassador for the Association and was one of the first industry professionals to receive the Certified TLE professional designations for individuals in the theatre and live events industry.



Prof Aaron Tshidzumba

Aaron holds a Doctorate in Communication (Radio and Television Broadcasting Technology) and is currently on the academic staff of UNISA. From 2013 to 2016, he served as a member of the SABC Board. He was also the CEO of the National Electronic Media Institute (NEMISA), responsible for developing training programmes for Radio Production, Television Production and Animation Design. Aaron has been a member of SACIAs Broadcast Industry Group since 2018 and was co-opted to the SACIA Board in 2020. He was instrumental in driving the development of the SACIA student council.



Aldred Dreyer  Cert BCT Professional

Aldred is a broadcast engineering professional who started his career at Sentech as a technician in training in 1997. Since then, he has worked in various technical and leadership roles at SABC, Namibia Broadcasting Corporation, eMedia, the Department of Communications and Accenture. Aldred also represented these organisations (technology representatives) on the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), the Southern African Digital Broadcasting Association (SADIBA) and the Southern African Broadcasting Association (SABA). During his career, work at SADIBA led to DVB-T being adopted as the DTT standard in South Africa. Under his leadership at the SABC, MHEG was adopted as a set-top box middleware standard. He also successfully conducted a DTT trial at SABC in 2009/2010 and implemented digital migration in Namibia. Aldred is the immediate past chair of SACIAs Broadcast Industry Group.



Rudi van der Vyver

Rudi is the Chief Executive Officer for We Are Events, an event management and production company focused on delivering unique, innovative, and results-driven eventing solutions. Before this role, he served as CEO of the Southern African Association for the Conference Industry (SAACI). He is one of only 18 African event practitioners to complete the international masterclass on the Neuroscience of Event Design and Architecture. Hes passionate about event strategy and psychology, creating experiences and driving return on investment for clients through practical and creative event management principles. He holds a BCom (Hons) degree in marketing from UNISA. He also has the designation of Chartered Marketer CM (SA) from the Marketing Association of South Africa.

Quinton Fredericks

Quinton is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and storyteller with more than 18 years of experience in the film and television industry. He is the chair of the SA Film Academy in Cape Town.  Since 2015, he has managed an after-school learning programme on the Cape Flats for Kalahari Film & Media, teaching film and television production to children most impacted by gang and drug violence. He is a former IPO Co-Chair and current IPO exco member. He started working with SACIA whenappointed to the DSAC audio-visual reference group in 2019. One of the recommendations of the reference group was that the audio-visual industry should develop a range of professional designations that allow the recognition of competent individuals working across the audio-visual sector. The IPO entered into a formal agreement with SACIA to support the development of a professional designation for film and television producers. Quinton has been the primary link between SACIA and the IPO on this project.



Roman Magis - Cert BCT Professional

Roman has over 25 years of experience in the communication industry in Europe, the Middle East and Africa - as an entrepreneur and in corporate environments. Consulting with large broadcasting and telecommunication companies in South Africa for the last 15 years and looking after media and advertising solutions for the Asian, Middle East and African regions. He has been actively involved in SACIA since 2015 and served as a member of the BIG Council since it was established. He was responsible for developing the processes, operating model and certification framework to award all SACIAs professional designations.
